Many cultures chew substances made from Mother Nature such as grasses, plants and resins. Chewing gum's history actually dates back to the ancient Greeks, being their favorite hobby. However, it was a William Semple, not a Greek, who first patented chewing gum on 28 December 1869 and a Susan Montgomery who had blown the largest gum bubble ever at 23 inches in diameter. She is recorded in the Guinness World Record.

The most popular brands are usually great for those who chew gum for casual reasons but terrible for those who want blow the largest bubble possible. Soft, flavorful, chewable and long lasting gum such as Bubble Yum and Bubbicilious are to be avoided by serious bubble gum blowers. Instead, they should be looking for gums that contain less sugar such as Double Bubble or Bazooka. These less popular brands may be harder to masticate, but easier to blow larger bubbles.

Learn to use small amounts of gum to blow your bubble. Adding another piece of gum might do more harm than good to your performance. The rule is more practice, not more gum. If you want to challenge Susan Montgomery Williams someday, you must practice with a maximum of three pieces of gum only.

To beat against the odds of blowing your gum bubbles to their full potential, try to practice indoors where it is easier to manage the wind and temperature. These two factors are crucial to your success. Too cold, the skin of your bubble will get thin and breaks easily; too hot, your bubble will collapse prematurely.

Unfortunately, the sugar and artificial flavors in all types of gum is not favorable for blowing record size bubbles. First you have to chew your gum until the sugar and artificial flavoring are almost gone. This action will actually strengthen your bubble and you get to feel the consistency of your gum as you chew along. At the right consistency, you can push your tongue through the gum to fill it with air and blow a bubble. Just be careful not to thrust too hard and make a hole. After you have blown a bubble, the gum cools and becomes less malleable. Chew it again to warm up the gum.

Be careful as you gradually blow your bubble up. Slow breaths give your gum time to stretch and grow while even breaths keep the pressure distributed equally to prevent your bubble from flopping. To blow the biggest bubble possible, do not to tighten your lips as if you were sucking on a lemon. That you make you blow harder subconsciously and ruin your best efforts. Remember to your lips open so that you can puff through a larger hole.

Practice makes perfect. Nevertheless, a strong jaw, tongue and diaphragm are also necessary to blow championship bubbles. Practice and play with your friends using the tips given above. Eventually you will find the right combination and perfect conditions for you to make the biggest bubble. While having a go at blowing bubbles, do not forget to have fun!
